What are Black Box Warnings ?

A black box warning is the strictest warning put in the labeling of prescription drugs or drug products. This is provided by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when there is reasonable evidence of an association of a serious hazard with the drug.

Unfortunately, black box warnings are only issued after drugs are brought to market and people suffer severe complications from taking them. Sadly there are new drugs brought to market every day that share some of the same similarities as these drugs, but unfortunately only time will tell. We listed some of the drugs below that are used to treat type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism that have black box warnings.

Type 2 Drugs with Black Box Warnings

  • Actos – Heart Failure
  • Invokana – Amputations
  • Janumet – Lactic Acidosis
  • Metformin- Reduced renal function (kidney failure) and lactic acidosis
  • Kazano – Lactic Acidosis
  • Victoza – Thyroid Cancer
  • Lantus – Lantus does not have a black box warning as of now, but there is research currently underway suggesting it poses a higher risk for cancer.
  • Thyroid Medication with a Black Box Warning

Statin Drug Warnings
Crestor – This drug does not yet have a black box warning, but just like other statin drugs used to treat high cholesterol it has many class action suits against it for causing type 2 diabetes. Statin drugs are proven to raise blood sugar in patients. This is another reason we work very hard to get you off harmful statin drugs and even blood pressure medications.

  • Synthroid – Toxicity

Pharmaceutical companies do not have your best interest at heart. There have been many documented cases of Big Pharma suppressing evidence of severe side effects in drugs before. This is mostly done to protect them and their shareholders.

Most pharmacists don’t agree with black box warnings. They feel it is a last ditch effort to keep a drug on the market. That is doing clear damage to a patients health. Most of them feel that the drug should be pulled from the market. One of the best examples of this is the drug Invokana. It has been proven, without a doubt, that it leads to infection in the lower extremities causing a much higher risk of amputation. Also to top it off, there are thousands of lawsuits against the drug and its still being prescribed daily with a black box warning. This warning takes away a patients right to file a lawsuit for damages. Just another case where Big Pharma protects themselves instead of their consumer.
